Surah Al e Imran Ayah #: 64-
Say: O People of the Scripture! Come to an agreement between us and you: that we shall worship none but Allah, and that we shall ascribe no partner unto Him, and that none of us shall take others for lords beside Allah. And if they turn away, then say: Bear witness that we are they who have surrendered (unto Him). (64) O People of the Scripture! Why will ye argue about Abraham, when the Torah and the Gospel were not revealed till after him? Have ye then no sense? (65) Lo! ye are those who argue about that whereof ye have some knowledge: Why then argue ye concerning that whereof ye have no knowledge? Allah knoweth. Ye know not. (66) Abraham was not a Jew, nor yet a Christian; but he was an upright man who had surrendered (to Allah), and he was not of the idolaters. (67) Lo! those of mankind who have the best claim to Abraham are those who followed him, and this Prophet and those who believe (with him); and Allah is the Protecting Guardian of the believers. (68
TAFSEER BY DR FARHAT HASHMI
Allah Subhanawataala says to Prophet Muhammad pbuh that say: O People of the book come together and decide that we will only believe in one God. This status should not be given to anyone or anything. Allah has (Nahl 36 Anbiya 25):
Surah Nahl 36
And verily We have raised in every nation a messenger, (proclaiming): Serve Allah and shun false gods. Then some of them (there were) whom Allah guided, and some of them (there were) upon whom error had just hold. Do but travel in the land and see the nature of the consequence for the deniers! (36)
Surah Anbiya: 25
Allah Subhanawataala says that He has sent Rasools before you (i.e. Prophet Muhammad pbuh) and gave them the wahy that there is no God but Allah and believes in the One God. and not to include anyone in this belief of one God.
In the Bible Jesus said pray to God. O children of Israel listen we only have one God.
Over time people defected and developed shirk in looking up to not things but developed a shirk in placing humans at such a status that it became compatible to Allah.
In Surah Shura 21:
Then I fled from you when I feared you, and my Lord vouchsafed me a command and appointed me (of the number) of those sent (by Him). (21)
They also invented their own sharia and the sharia developed by humans overrode the sharia given by Allah. And Allah Subhanawataala says in Surah Nahl 116:
In Surah Nahl Allah Subhanawataala says:
And speak not, concerning that which your own tongues qualify (as clean or unclean), the falsehood: “This is lawful, and this is forbidden,” so that ye invent a lie against Allah. Lo! Those who invent a lie against Allah will not succeed. (116)
Did not the Ulema and Shaikh did not make things haraam a and halaal for you on their own and did you not obey them, this is making Ghair Allah to be at the status as Allah. A person cannot make things halal or haraam, other than what Allah Subhanawataala has designated.
. In the beginning of surah Tahreem Allah Subhnanawataala says why do you make something haram which is halal:
O Prophet! Why bannest thou that which Allah hath made lawful for thee, seeking to please thy wives? And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. (1) Allah hath made lawful for you (Muslims) absolution from your oaths (of such a kind), and Allah is your Protector. He is the Knower, the Wise. (2) In Surah Tahreem:
Some things have been made haraam according to the Sunnah. These were not based on our Prophets likes and dislikes, but were commanded by a wahy (revelation) from Allah.
Any one who leaves sahih Hadith and follows a Mufti or Faqi he or she is doing wrong.
Imam Abu Hanifa said that when you get sahih Hadith that is my Hadith, which I follow.
If we leave Allah’s ruling we cannot take another’s ruling.
We have to Allah’s obedience and Rasool’s obedience and those who are responsible.
Hazrat Ali said “ You are not allowed to obey any human if in it is the disobedience of Allah”
Respond to the Rasools call, which is a life giving call.
When faced with the choice between the obedience of humans and Allah, we have to obey Allah.
If there is no disobedience of Allah then obedience is in accordance with the status or haq of that person on us eg parents and teachers hold more Haq over us than others.
Only the ebadhah of Allah is sufficient but no other is to be included in this ebadah.
We should never be the Rabb of another, which means that no one should be obedient to any other than Allah if his or her commands countermand Allah’s commands.
If they turn their faces then tell them that we are Muslims. Here the definition of Muslim is defined as noted above.
After Hudaiybia Prophet Muhammad pbuh wrote letters of invitation to Islam to powerful kings and Heads of State is based on this ayah.
A letter from Prophet Muhammad pbuh has been unearthed in a monastery in Egypt.
Where he quotes this ayah.
Thus this ayah was revealed to RasoolAllah pbuh to teach him how to call people of the book to Islam.
This is summarized as follows:
1. Seek common grounds
2. Ask them to return to Allah and believe in authentic hadith and Quran
Within Muslims How to call them back to Islam:
1. All the factions can come together if we all come together and agree to believe in the Quran, Sunnah, sahaba and then ones who were closest to them.
When one makes ideals, which are non-Allah, then it will create division.
Allah Subhanawataala says in Surah Baqara: 2:148
O people of the book People were fighting about Abraham whether they were Jews or Christian, these things came after Abraham. Torah and Injeel were revealed after Abraham, why dont you use your deductive intellect
You fought with each other on those things in which you had some knowledge; you have no right to fight about those things of which you have no knowledge
Abraham was neither Jew nor Christian, he was a Hanifa and did not belong to any group, sect, he was a Hanifam Muslim
What is the lesson for us: We should follow the path of Abraham, use all the good words of all the people of Knowledge of Deen, but do not use one part of one Imam because one is easier that the other.
Sometimes the students study more and do more research and surpass the teacher scholar. The Imams said if there is a difference in what the Imam says and what is the Sunnah then take the Sunnah.
Discussion without bias, or without prejudice. Listen to people but believe the one who discusses with daleels and proofs available.
In the matter of Prophets do not differentiate them even though some were given more status than others.
Honor all the imams and all scholars but do not put one over the other, and do not become a groupie to the point of degrading the other person.
In the final analysis follow the Quran and Sunnah and respect your scholars and teachers as long as they do not deviate from the essence of these teachings.
