Surah Nahl 16:48-50

Have they not observed all things that Allah hath created, how their shadows incline to the right and to the left, making prostration unto Allah, and they are lowly? (48) And unto Allah maketh prostration whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth of living creatures, and the angels (also) and they are not proud. (49) They fear their Lord above them, and do what they are bidden. (50)

TAFSEER BY DR FARHAT HASHMI (translated into English)

What ever Allah Subhanawataala has created, their shadows turn to the north and south, prostrating to Allah and they are humble in front of Allah.
When the sun comes out, every standing thing ahs a shadow and its shadow moves from one side to the other. Everything is in prostration to Allah.

Who was the biggest denier of prostration………..Iblis whose major crime was that he was disobedient to Allah and refused to do Sajdah.
Thus for us….. We have to bow our head to Allah Subhanawataala’s command to make salah. Sallah is a duty irrespective of place, health and physical ability and special adaptations have been permitted for physical impairment, travel, battle, etc. Even a quadriplegic can pray with the movement of his eyes, but pray he must.

What a Beautiful gift there is in prostration to Him Subhanawataala…….that we sometimes forget to open and enjoy………

The magnolia tree and its shadow in sajdah at Asr

Surah Raad 13:15
And unto Allah falleth prostrate whosoever is in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly, as do their shadows in the morning and the evening hours. (15)

Tafseer (continued)

The sajdah of the immobile: by their shadow doing sajdah in the water

Some of those things that cannot move physically their shadows flatten themselves in prostration to Allah, in the morning and evening.

The shadows of the trees in sajdah wal jamaat

But what of Human beings?
Sajdah means not just a physical prostration but also the laying down of ones pride and arrogance and the pride in one’s intellect.
All of Allah’s creation have no arrogance and are humble. (There is a silent except………..here

All living, moving things are in prostration to Allah on, in or over the earth. Even the angels are in prostration. They are not arrogant and are humble. So who is left?

Hadith related by Abu Darda:
The Heavens are creaking because every inch is occupied with the angels in prostration.

Thus for humans……………we too have to also prostrate. Salaah is a mandatory commandment, rain or shine, health or disease, travel or home, war or peace and in every condition, it is one ibadah that is not excused, and cannot be made up.

Excuses made by those who do not pray salaah
1. They usually make fun of people who pray discounting their salah by recounting their other weaknesses
3.  They will recount their other good deeds and thus connote that they thus do not need to make salaah

The angels are afraid of Allah and obey Allah in whatever they are commanded.
Those creations that we cannot see, they too are in sajdah
The real Alim are those who are afraid of Allah.
Ayah 49-50: Sajdah e Tilawat
End Tafseer

My take:
Allah Subhanawataala gives us the opportunity five times a day and more if we want, to lay down our fears, our worries, impediments to our spiritual freedom and our arrogance for false fleeting successes……… IN SALAH.

  1. Asalaam o Alaikum Teepu,

Thank you for your expansion of the topic with valuable insight.

It was a pleasure to read the verses on Sajdah and dil by Dr. Mohammad Iqbal poet and philosopher of the subcontinent.
    Do you have the urdu?
    Jazaik Allah Khair!

  2. Assalam Aleikum,

In the Qur’an we read, in translation:

“It is We Who created you and gave you shape; then We bade the angels bow down to Adam, and they bowed down; not so Iblees; He refused to be of those who bow down.”

An interesting point is that Sabaeans worshipped God’s Names (El-Esmea) as angels in the stars, and thus worshiped the stars. With one stroke Allah reverses the worship of stars to sajdah by the stars (angels) to Adam. In other words Islam tells these people that those that you think you worship did sajdah to Adam One would think that this one Ayat completely undermined the basis of this false Sabaean belief? Of course, this false belief of assigning the stars with special properties and considering it the angelic domain was later demolished by direct observation, but that was centuries later.
For a long time the celestial sphere was thought to have different rules (physics) than earthly ones, hence common usage still has of celestial or angelic sphere vs earthly or human. This notion was finally dispelled by astrophysics.

    Iqbal on Sajdah and Dil:

    1. Badal ke bhais phir atay hain her zamane mein
Agar che peer hai adm , jawan hein Laat -o-Man’at
    2. Yeh aik sajda jisay tu giran samhjta hei
Hazaar sajdoon sey deta hai Admi to ko nejad. .
    3. Daagh-e Sajood Agar teri Jabeen Pey Huwa tau Kya Huwa.
Koi Aisa Sajda Bhi kar ke Zameen Per Nishaan Rahay
    And finally about Dil:
    4. Ishq ke daam mein phans kar ye reha hota hai
Barq girti hai to ye nakhl hara hota hai
