RESPECTING THE SAHABA AND SAHABIAT

Respect , honor and tawaduh ( Arabic word for extremely polite form of respect) is a statement of: “love in plain clothes”.

One cannot have hate in the heart and depict respect, honor and tawaduh out of fear or intimidation.

Thus, the primary premise in the commandments to Muslims in the Quran is “Ateey Allah and Ateeh ar Rasul (SAW).

The word Ateeh holds a world of meaning in it. Ateeh has been translated into” obedience”, but its essence is reaching the point of obedience not out of fear but out of love, respect and honoring the recipient. Such a feeling and its ensuing action stems from the heart, not the analytical brain.

It is said that the more you get to know someone’s beautiful interior the more you love them.

Thus, as Muslims how do we love and get to know Allah and His Rasool (SAW)

The short answer is we get to know Allah through His attributes.

Thus, when I gaze out at the Bosphorus and see the Dolphins playing in the water and the birds following them:

I see:

  • the attribute of Allah of creating a mammal in water that has the ultrasonic eye that can detect the heartbeat in a human being ( we all know the famous incident when a Dolphin brought a drowning man to the surface by using its ultrasound to figure out that his heart was weakening and the heartbeat was failing).

I see the attribute of Allah in creating a bird that is heavy with feathers and flesh and yet stays in flight for hours and sometimes days if you include the migrating birds.

  • birds quranDSHLkaTX4AAJ49K.jpg-large
  • I see the attribute of Allah in that the birds do not have a fridge and do not store food and yet when they fly out in the morning and evening, they know he is Razzak and he provides for them and they return satiated.

How do I get to know the Prophet PBUH?

  • by his Seerah ( His life)
  • By the Hadith related by his (SAW) companions: His words and actions of what he liked and what displeased him which he stated was all from Allah and not from his own desire.
  • His clear warnings and commands in the Hadith

The science of hadith is a well-researched method of evaluating, assessing the integrity of the Hadith and classifying it according to its use in beautifying habits or deriving laws and judgement ( Fiqh) and to find more about it CLICK HERE.

Respect also springs from awe which happens when something crosses the border of rational intellect and is desired by the heart for its beauty and grandeur. Thus, awe for Allah and His Rasool also brings respect and honorable love.

In this day and age of haranguing about what is true and what is not, here are three keys to a peaceful heart:

  1. Allah is in control and that no harm can come to you without his permission and no good can come to you without His permission
  2. Envy and hatred are not only diseases of the heart but are red hot coals in your hands which if you keep hidden in your hand, they will burn you and if you throw them at someone you will burn them.
  3. Everything good was created by Allah for the human being’s benefit. Everything harmful was forbidden in the Quran and the Hadith for the integrity of the peace and harmony in the human being and his or her surroundings.

With these three principles  what naturally evolves is gratitude, love, respect and the desire to honor Allah and His Rasool SAW.

RasulAllah SAW had a finite life and Allah recalled him when the period was complete. However, there were two things that can still bring us peace, love and a happy life and those are what we can inherit from Allah’s instructions in two arenas:

Allah Subhanawataala reassures us that:

  1. The Quran, His word is for all times and that He Subhanawataala will protect it from being corrupted.
  2. Rasool Allah SAW was sent by Him as “Rahmatulil Alameen” a Mercy for Mankind for all times to come.

PARTAKING OF THE RAHMA OF ALLAH VIA HIS RASOOL

The Sahaba, the Taabieen, and the Awliya were men and women of integrity and honor who did their best to document each and every aspect and action of the life of RasulAllah SAW.

Thus, those of us who came centuries after them could use their documentation of the Hadith and the life of the RasulAllah SAW as a light to find the path of happiness on the  Siraat e Mustaqeem ( The straight path to Goodness)

RESPECT FOR THE SAHABA ( THE COMPANIONS OF RASULALLAH SAW)

The basic premise:

How one feels as a Muslims towards the Sahaba or the Companions of RasulAllah SAW is entirely dependent on whether he or she loves respects and honors RasulAllah SAW and honors how he SAW said and felt about his companions ( Sahabas).

Thus, in this section I am going to share a few hadiths  about the Sahaba from my class conducted by Mufti Adnan Kakakhail: I pray that they will be beneficial in cleansing our hearts towards our attitude towards the Sahaba and putting us all on the path of Happiness towards the pleasure of Allah Subhanawataala.

  1. RASULLALLAH SAW’S STERN WARNING REGARDING OUR BEHAVIOR TOWARDS THE SAHABA

Hadith Jami at Tirmidhi 3862, Chapter 50, Chapter of Virtues.

Narrated ‘Abdullah bin Mughaffal: that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: (Fear) Allah! (Fear) Allah regarding my Companions! Do not make them objects of insults after me. Whoever loves them, it is out of love of me that he loves them. And whoever hates them, it is out of hatred for me that he hates them. And whoever harms them, he has harmed me, and whoever harms me, he has offended Allah, and whoever offends Allah, [then] he shall soon be punished.

DISCUSSION

RasulAllah SAW said:

  • Take heed, whoever loves the Sahaba has love for me
  • Whoever hates the Sahaba it will be due to hatred( bughz) for me which comes out in this manner( he will use the other Sahabis and Ahl Bayt as his shield)

Discussion continued:

  • Does one fault Adam AS that he was removed from Jannah? And what was said, similarly no one is allowed to judge the Sahabas. One who does that he or she is away from the mercy of Allah.
  • One must remember before moving the tongue that RasulAllah SAW said: Whoever hurt the Sahaba hurt me, the one who hurt me, he or she hurt Allah and if someone hurts Allah he will be gripped by Allah ( In this world Allah removes guidance from such a person and that person becomes lost from the straight path, and takes his emaan (which is the most treasured attribute in a person) out of them: such people become progressively misguided and away from Deen in this dunya this is the punishment for hurting i.e. offending Allah.
  • On the Day of Akhirah all of the Sahaba are going into Jannah the people who are being stopped and being interrogated are those who used to objectify and were disrespectful to the Sahaba in dunya

2. SAHABAH: GUIDES AND LIGHT FOR THEIR COMMUNITIES

HADITH TIRMIDHI 3865, CHAPTER 50, CHAPTER ON VIRTUES

Narrated ‘Abdullah bin Buraidah: from his father, that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: There is no one among my Companions who dies in a land except that he shall be resurrected as a guide and light for them (people of that land) on the Day of Resurrection.

Shrine of Sheikh Bahaudin Zakaria, in Multan

    DISCUSSION

  • We must remember and acknowledge with gratitude that we are Muslim today because of the Sahaba, who left Mecca and Medina and travelled far and wide to bring Islam to the communities of the globe.
  • Those of us from the subcontinent of Indo Pakistan are deeply indebted to the Sahaba that our ancestors became Muslims and we were born Muslims. If they had not travelled to spread the Light of Islam our ancestors would have been drinking cow urine and worshipping pieces of rocks and putting flowers and food at their feet and entreating these inert pieces of stones to help us. We too would have followed suit
  • I am personally deeply grateful for this travel of the Sahaba to bring us light via my ancestor Sheikh Bahudin Zakaria who was a Daee Alim whose ancestors who had travelled from Arabia and stayed to teach, love and release those who were crushed under the weight of the polytheists. He is buried in Multan, Pakistan.
  • The awliya of Allah who carry the Light of Deen handed to them by the Sahaba are sprinkled all over the world lighting it up like a fairy land of mystic, beauty and peace.
  • Those of us who have traveled to foreign lands in search of a “better” life need to re-evaluate our purpose in the light of the actions of the Sahaba and correct our intentions and actions accordingly to earn the pleasure of Allah.
  • RasulAllah SAW’s WARNING TO THE MUSLIMS REGARDING SAH

Hadith Jami at Tirmidhi 3862, Chapter 50, Chapter of Virtues.

Narrated ‘Abdullah bin Mughaffal: that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: (Fear) Allah! (Fear) Allah regarding my Companions! Do not make them objects of insults after me. THE VALUE OF THE SAHABA FOR THE PROPHET SAW

SAHIH BUKHARI 3673, CHAPTER 63, THE VIRTUES AND MERITS OF THE COMPANIONS OF THE PROPHET

Narrated Abu Sa`id: The Prophet said, Do not abuse my companions for if any one of you spent gold equal to Uhud (in Allah’s Cause) it would not be equal to a Mud or even a half Mud spent by one of them.

DISCUSSION

  • Those who critic the Sahaba are cursed by their mothers for them to behave in this manner about the Sahaba
  • end lesson on hadees

dua-for-memorization-of-the-quran

Dua: May Allah give us the tawfeeq to:

  • cleanse our hearts

  • to stop our Nafs from the temptation of judging the Sahaba

  • To control our Nafs from questioning the Qadaa wal Qadar of Allah regarding historic events

  • To leash our Nafs from judging the Sahaba who were all beloved to our Rasool SAW.

  • To allow us to leash our “Hawa” or intellectual arrogance in attempting to judge the actions of our Sahabas with our finite intellect and limited and defective knowledge of events.

May Allah protect and guide our heart and control our Nafs and our tongue which is but a tool for them, and which may be used for good or evil.
