HADITHS BRINGING HEALING & SOLACE NOW AND FOREVER
It is one hour before Maghrib and the phone lights up, my friend from Pakistan has sent me the link of the hadith lesson that she is sharing with me. I look out across the Bosphorus at the shoreline of Istanbul on the European continent and know that in its bosom it has embraced the sick and those dying of the deadly virus…….
Today’s lesson is so apt for this moment and time. So, here is my understanding of it.
This Hadith lesson is taught by : MUFTI SYED ADNAN KAKAKHAIL of AlBurhan.org
All mistakes are mine and may Allah forgive me for them, and may my efforts to reach the sick and the dying and their loved ones be successful across the globe and bring some comfort and solace to them.
Before beginning the formal lesson in hadith Mufti Kakakhail introduced us to the proper manner of learning hadith.
REVERENCE & ETIQUETTE IN THE STUDY OF HADITH
In another lesson, Mufti Khakakhail explained that when you read, recite or listen to the Hadith i.e. the words of our beloved Prophet Muhammad pbuh do so with utmost respect and behave as if you are in his (pbuh) presence because Allah is watching you.
WHAT TO DO AT MAGHRIB AND NIGHT RITUALS
5630 BUKHARI SHAREEF: JABIR RA said that RasullAllah Salah Oahu alayhe wasallam (SAW) said”
When it is evening and the darkness of night comes down, (right after maghrib) prevent your children from going out because at this time the Shayateen spread out, and when after some part of the night passes then you don’t have to restrain them.
When it is night take Allah’s name and close the doors, because Shaytaan cannot open closed doors.
Close (cap it) the mouth of the water containers , close them at night and cover your dishes, with Allah’s name.
In summary say Allah’s name do the following at night.
- Close doors
- Cover water containers
- Cover dishes
If you can’t find a cover put something on it.
And turn the lights off ( fire, lights,)
We usually close doors because of thieves,
In Hadith the reason for closing doors is because of Shaytaan not thieves.
These are the instructions from Allah via the Hadith.
THE UNDERLYING MESSAGE OF SOLACE FOR PAIN
Bukhari hadith 5442: COMFORTING HADITH REGARDING PAIN
Abu Huraira said that RasulAllah SAW said:
Allah has put khair in these for us:
Musalman does not have any difficulty ( tiredness) or illness, or Hamm ( sadness) those difficulties that in the future cause anxiety and Huzn is grief ( loss of something ), Gham, sadma (sorrow) till even if a thorn pricks him or her Allah forgives the sins of that person. When a person has pain and one does sabr.
THE STRENGTH TO BEAR THE CHALLENGES AND BOUNCE BACK
HADITH BUKHARI 5844: COMFORTING hadith for recovering from challenges
Ahl emaan will have challenges and it might prostrate them but when the condition goes away, they will recover.,
A momin is like the field of plants, whichever side the wind comes the plants are pushed down and they bend, when the wind stops, the plants straighten up again,
Thus, a Momin is faced with difficulties which affect him but when they go, they stand back up again.
There are some kaafir and may be like the Sanober tree is straight, some people are like that, when Allah sends something to that tree it is uprooted and thrown down.
SUFFERRING IN PAIN IS NOT IN VAIN: DON’T INVITE IT BUT KNOW ITS CONSEQUENCES
BUKHARI SHAREEF 5647 HADITH: PAIN & AND THE DUSTING OFF OF SINS
ABDULLAH IBN MASUD SAID HE said I came to RasullAlllah pbuh while he was sick, I said to him “Ya RasulAllah you have a high fever”, RA responded: “ I have such a high fever that two men have” I said “ Is this because you will get twice the amount of ajar? Because it is twice the fever”. RasullAllah (SAW) said “yes I will get twice the ajar”
RasullAllah SAW said “when any Muslim has any pain Allah dusts off his sins like leaves are dusted off in autumn from a tree”
Thus, when anyone falls ill, or is in pain then Allah dusts off the sins and is purified from his or her sins
BRINGING HEALING AND SOLACE TO THE SICK PATIENT, HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS
BUKHARI SHARIEEF: DO’S AND DONTS OF VISITING THE SICK
Hz Abu Moosa Al Ashari said that RasulAllah SAW said:
Three things are impressed upon
Feed the hungry. This is in all the faiths
Visit the sick: this has many Islamic reasons : Ali RA said “ I heard that any Muslim who visits a sick person in the morning 70,000 angels pray for him,
and if he does that in the evening then 70,000 angels make dua for him till morning
TEN ETIQUETTE OF VISITATION OF THE SICK
- Knock on the door even if you know the people well. Take permission to enter, even the people of the home should not enter stealthily.
- Knock and stand back to the side, not right in front of the door.
- When you are asked “who is there” make your introduction clear, I am so and so and I am coming from such a place and for this reason.
- Make sure it is not an inopportune time to visit, ask the relative or nurse what is a good time to visit
- Don’t stay long
- Keep your eyes lowered and don’t look at the patient’s body and do not question about his body parts that are diseased.
- Use comfort and Shafqat ( kindness, affectionate compassion)
- Read dua 7 times : for pain in the body it is authentically related that the Prophet (peace be upon him) prescribed the following for a companion who was in pain:
“…place you hand on the part of the body where the pain is and say, “bismillah” (بِسْمِ اللَّهِ) three times. Also say, “a’uthu billahi wa qudratihi min shari ma ajid wa uhadhir” (أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ وَقُدْرَتِهِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أَجِدُ وَأُحَاذِرُ) seven times – wiping the area each time.” (Muslim)
“Bismillah” means “in the name of Allah”. “A’uthu billahi wa qudratihi min shari ma ajid wa uhadhir” translates roughly as “I seek refuge in Allah and in His omnipotence from the evil (pain) that I find and I seek to avoid it.” Of course, if one experiences persistent pain one should visit a qualified health care professional, yet the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) advice can be followed before or after such a visit and can be accompany any other remedies that may be prescribed.
9. DO not talk about horrifying tales of the illness
10. When your Muslim brother or sister is captured as a prisoner then give the fidya (the ransom) to get the prisoner released. If Muslims are captured by non-Muslims consider the expenditure to release them as a khair (beneficial)
DUA AND SABR IN AN AFFLICITON
HADITH BUKHARI SHAREEF: HZ IBN ABBASS SAID: RasulAllah SAW said “ should I show you a jannati woman”
He said “ This dark-skinned woman came to RA and said I have epileptic fits and I become exposed in my body “ please pray for me.
RA said “ if you can do Sabr you will get Jannah”” or if you want I can make dua that Allah gives you Afiya” The women said “ I will do sabr” (asbir) “ there is one thing, my body gets exposed just make this dua that my purdah my cover is not opened and I am not exposed” RA did that.
Thus, this woman is jannati
Explanation: Sabr in illness is the straight path to Jannah.
- The station of Azeemat : sabr and Jannat
- The station of Rukhsat: dua for shifa and Allah heals
Thus, dua is mandated in illness, however if one does sabr and accepts it then the path is straight to Jannah
THE STATUS OF THE BLIND REWARDED IN THE HEREAFTER BY ALLAH…
HADITH BUKHARI SHAREEF 5652: REGARDING BLINDNESS
Anas ibn Malik said I heard from RASULALLAH SAW ” when I involve someone in illness or blindness of two eyes , Allah gives this person Jannah”
Whether the blindness is by birth or acquired if one does sabr that this is from Allah and I will bear it, they are given Jannah.
Those who have had no illness in this world when they will see those people whose illness in the world and see their ajar they will say We wish that our bodies had been cut up with scissors.
One should ask for afiya, we are weak, don’t ask for illness, but those who have illnesses it is for them…….
EXPRESSING COMPASSION FOR THE DYING
HADITH 5653 BUKHARI: TEARS AT THE PASSING OF A LOVED ONE ARE FROM THE RAHMA OF ALLAH
RasulAllah SAW’s grandchild :Zeyneb RA oldest sons’ death. His name was Ali
Usama ibn Zaid (Hib un Nabi) relates this : RA daughter sent a message to RA, I was with him, she said “ my daughter/son is almost near death so if you can come to us please”
RA said “salaam, and said Allah’s will is what he takes and what he gives and everything is fixed in time thus one should hope with sabr.
She sent a message again , please come.
RA stood up “ the child was brought to RasulAllah SAW’s lap, the child in an agitated state. Usama said tears fell from his eyes and Saad said “ Ya RasoolAllah your eyes are wet” (in the face of sabr)
RasulAllah SAW said these tears are the Rahma of Allah and he puts it in the heart of whomsoever he wishes and He does Raham (mercy) on the one whose heart has Rahm (mercy)
“Allah puts rahm in the heart of whom he wishes and he gives Rahm on those who are Raheem.
DO NOT SOUND YOUR OWN DEATH KNELL
HADITH SAHIH BUKHARI SHARIF: 5662: DO NOT SPEAK OF DEPRESSING THINGS WHEN SICK
IBN ABBAS : He went to “la baasa tahuur inshallah” Inshallah this illness will purify you from sins”
When he said that the villager said : you said this will purify me , No this is a fever, which has attacked an old person so that it shows him the path to the grave”.
RA said “ If that is what you say then so be it”
One should not speak depressing things when one is sick, many old people say these things
Next day the old man died.
The patient should accept advise, and the one who is giving comforting advice the patient should agree and not negate it.
Thus, one should be hopeful till the end.
Thus, the times whether they are end time the time is passed gracefully.
OFFER THE BOUQUET OF SHAHADA OF TAWHEED TO THE TERMINALLY ILL
HADITH BUKHARI SHARIEEF 5657: VISITING A SICK NON-MUSLIM
There was a Yehudi child who use to serve Rasullallah SAW
He got sick.
RasullAllah SAW that he was at end times,
RasulAllah SAW said to him to recite The Kallima ( shahada)
The child looked at his father
The father said “what he is saying agree with him”
The child took shahada.
And he died.
RasulAllah SAW came back very happy that the child had said the Kalima (and had been saved from the FIRE)
( explanation: The child was adult, ( Baligh) ,thus it is ok to do visitation of the non-Muslim sick and also have the possibility of giving the message of tawheed if you know him or her well.
The lesson ends and the Maghrib adhaan resounds across the water, inshallah bringing hope and comfort to those sick and facing challenges.
