QABAD AND BAST: CONSTRICTION & EXPANSION AN INVERSE RELATIONSHIP WITH DHIKR AND DUA

A REFLECTION AT THE RETREAT IN THE MOUNTAINS

I am walking down the road that unrolls like a ribbon in the valley next to the brook. The sun is hiding behind the hijab of the fluffy clouds. fall is in aging splendor reminding us that after every summer there is a fall…….

Beside me the brook rolls under the bridge with man made spouts some of which are expanded and one is constricted.

When the water is Qabad (restricted) it flows through the restriction with a garbling noise……….which perhaps is Dhikr of Allah or Dua to get it out of its constriction I guess and replace it with ease; however when ease is provided and replaced with expansion, the water falls silent.

Thus is so with human beings………we remember Him when constricted and the Dhikr fades into silence when He (Subhanawataala) expands lifes opportunities for us and makes it easy.

Some of the sages prefer Qabad constriction over Bast (expansion) and find an intimacy with Allah in their Qabad (constriction).

He (subhanawataala) reminds us in Surah inshirah…….. to remember Him also when we are in ease.
