Guman aabad hasti mien , yaqeen mard-e-mussalman ka
Biaban ki shab-e-tareek mein, qandeel ruh’bani

Bang-e-dara, Tulu’h-e-Islam

The  certitude (of iman) of the ‘man of God’ in this doubt-filled existence
Is like the candle ( hope for survival) of the hermit’s hut that shines in the dark night of wilderness.

Notes:

1. For description  of Iqbal s’  man of God , see poem  Mard-e-musallman in Zarb-e-Kaleem’

2.  An imagery of  hope is the light of the hermit’s cottage. It brings, hope for a nights rest and sustenance, to the exhausted traveler lost in the darkness of the wilderness. This imagery is also in Iqbal’s Aik Arzoo in Bang-e-Daraa

One translation is:

Existence populated with disbelief/doubt. It contrasts populated with wilderness for the potential believer who is running away from ‘population’ only to find himself lost in the darkness of the wilderness till the candle of hope offered by the  certitude of mard-e-musalman is  noticed.

The following translation given below is not mine, but it gives a  meaning of sorts:

When night’s travelers falter behind with fatigue
Their only hope my broken earthenware lamp may be

May the lightning lead them to my hut
When clouds hovering over the whole sky be
