|31||And when Our messengers came to Ibrahim with the good news, they said: Surely we are going to destroy the people of this town, for its people are unjust. He said: Surely in it is Lut. They said: We know well who is in it; we shall certainly deliver him and his followers, except his wife; she shall be of those who remain behind (32)|
TAFSEER DERIVED FROM DR. FARHAT HASHMI
The angels brought good tidings and bad news to Ibrahim AS.
He and his wife were old and Allah Subhanawataala sent him good tidings that they were going to have a son. The angels also brought him the message that the nation of Lot i.e. Sodom was going to be destroyed because they were flagrantly disobedient to Allah Subhanawataala despite being warned by Allah’s messenger Lot AS.
This is where we learn the ultimate lesson of compassion………..Allah’s message is spread with true sincerity and compassion for the unruly, ignorant and even the flagrantly disobedient.
While Ibrahim AS was overjoyed at the news of having a son in his old age, he immediately turned to the angels carrying Allah’s message with concern, and compassion for the nation of Sodom and Gomorrah, the angels had firm and detailed orders from Allah and said so.
……..And what of Lot who was also in Sodom? He asked. His concern for his nephew and his family overcame his personal joy. The angels reassured him that Allah takes care of His messengers and that he along with his true followers will be saved except for his wife who will be left in the dust………….(she will be of the Ghabireen)
What we learn from this:(MY TAKE)
Ibrahim AS did not condone the acts of lewdness, and open disobedience to Allah by the nation of Lot, but at the same time he sincerely wanted to save them from the FIRE.
How often we smugly say: “well he got what he deserved “ or “good riddance of bad rubbish” etc.
How terribly and flagrantly defiantly disobedient were the people of Sodom and yet Ibrahim AS compassion for them was not what would happen to them in this dunya but that they would be the FIRE eternally.
It is Allah who passes the final judgment
It is Allah who decides who will be in Paradise and who will be the FIRE
Human beings can change, and return to Him Subhanawataala (TAWBAH) even in the last hours of their life
It is not for us to judge the final destination of any human being, for change is inevitable
We should not condone nor encourage nor turn our face away from the disobedience of Allah without saying or doing something about it, but we must do so with compassion in our hearts.
To evaluate our level of compassion we must ask ourselves where do we want our fellow humans being to end up?
Finally: Do we wish for others what we wish for ourselves? (Surah AL Imran)
