WHAT TO DO WHEN DEPRESSION APPROACHES……………

The darkness that invades the soul is of the deepest kind sometimes without a chink of light to grasp.

Spiraling down into its depths can be prevented by remembering that the grief and or fear that cast the first shadow was just the placing of the first brick that will build a wall around you and encase you with smothering darkness.

In medicine we have many names for it the most comprehensive one being depression.

It is urgent to remember that the one He who created us, gave us life, and will one day take us back has the power to keep us in this state or change it ………and best of all we have to ASK!

Hidden in the pages of the Quran is the magic formula to ward of the Darkness of Depression. Allah Subhanawataala sends a beacon of promise, the shaft of light that if you follow it you will be given a hand up and out of the well of darkness into the brilliant light. If we continue to follow His designated path it will lead us to prosperity in this world and in the Akhirah.

How do I know it?

I know it through my own personal experience and through Yusuf (AS) the little boy who was thrown into the well by his brothers who wailed and begged them not to leave him but mercilessly they did. Soon the darkness in the depths of the well melded with the darkness of the night one after another and yet the darkness did not enter his soul. Why not?

It was only his body that was in darkness for an untold period of time unknown to him that if he would ever be lifted into the light or not………but we know as does every eye that reads the scriptures, that he was not only lifted but lifted to the zenith of power in one of the most powerful and affluent nations of that time.

It is He who determines who will be lifted, but there is a caveat a milepost to follow. It is his promise that NO ONE WHO FOLLOWS HIS GUIDANCE WILL GRIEVE OR HAVE FEAR…

We said: “Get down all of you from this place (the Paradise), then whenever there comes to you Guidance from Me, and whoever follows My Guidance, there shall be no fear on them, nor shall they grieve.

(  سورة البقرة  , Al-Baqara, Chapter #2, Verse #38)

Can we doubt His (Subhanawataala’s) promise? And if we do…………what is left except the deep dungeon of darkness in the depths of the ocean with no orientation to hope, life or sanity, sinking deeper with each ticking moment deeper into the gloom till all joy of life and living disappears, and the naimah of Allah pale in the darkness to shadows of nothingness.

A TOUCH OF SUFFOCATING FEAR……….

For a moment standing under the trees in the starlit night, I too was touched by the darkness, the same darkness that touched someone loved by us who decided to end it all……….and then I remembered the stifling darkness of the well with a young four year old boy in it…………..YUSUF (AS)!

By the grace of Allah the touch of darkness did not last as I grasped for the dua and the promise in the Quran by Him SUbhanawataala, and yet clinging to me was the memory of darkness and I had a vision of how it could drag us into the dark depths of the ocean, and perhaps never being able to get out of it into the light.

DUA/SUPPLICATION:

اللّهُـمَّ لا مانِعَ لِما أَعْطَـيْت، وَلا مُعْطِـيَ لِما مَنَـعْت، وَلا يَنْفَـعُ ذا الجَـدِّ مِنْـكَ الجَـد .

“Allaahumma laa maani‘a limaa a‘tayt, wa laa mu‘tiya limaa mana‘t. Wa laa yanfa‘u dhal-jaddi minkal-jadd.”

“Ô Allaah, none can prevent what You have willed to bestow. And none can bestow what You have willed to prevent. And no wealth or majesty can benefit anyone, as from You is all wealth and majesty.”

WHO TO COMPLAIN TO?

Sometimes grief, sadness and fear overwhelms us and at that time we must remember the instructions in the Quran given to us via Yusuf (AS) father who was also a Nabi:

12:84   وَتَوَلَّىٰ عَنْهُمْ وَقَالَ يَا أَسَفَىٰ عَلَىٰ يُوسُفَ وَابْيَضَّتْ عَيْنَاهُ مِنَ الْحُزْنِ فَهُوَ كَظِيمٌ

(4) He said: “I only complain of my GRIEF and sorrow to Allah, and I know from Allah that which you know not.

(  سورة يوسف  , Yusuf, Chapter #12, Verse #86)

کہا میں تو اپنی پریشانی اور غم کا اظہار الله ہی کے سامنے کرتا ہوں اور الله کی طرف سے میں وہ جانتا ہوں جو تم نہیں جانتے

WHERE TO SEEK HELP?

Allah has made many places of refuge for his people. Keep Him (Subhanawataala) close to you at all times and stay away from the edges of darkness, when you feel them approaching, run towards the light of the Quran and your Creators words and He will embrace you with Light.

And seek help in patience and As-Salat (the prayer) and truly it is extremely heavy and hard except for Al-Khashi’un [i.e. the true believers in Allah – those who obey Allah with full submission, fear much from His Punishment, and believe in His Promise (Paradise) and in His Warnings (Hell)].

(  سورة البقرة  , Al-Baqara, Chapter #2, Verse #45)

This earth belongs to Allah and no one can harm anyone without the izm of Allah. One temporarily one may think that one is in the darkness of the well as was Yusuf as but it is Allah who took him out and it is He who takes out those who are in darkness, if they follow His guidance!

All our live moments we have to remember this……….every day is a new challenge.

And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to As-Sabirun (the patient).

(  سورة البقرة  , Al-Baqara, Chapter #2, Verse #155)

In the end we know from the words of Allah that inshallah those of us who have clung to His rope in Destitution and in the Darkness of Depression, will say:

And they will say: “All the praises and thanks be to Allah Who has removed from us (all) GRIEF. Verily, our Lord is indeed Oft-Forgiving, Most Ready to appreciate (good deeds and to recompense).

(  سورة فاطر  , Fatir, Chapter #35, Verse #34)

May Allah lower the rope for those of you who are still in the well………….
