SURAH SHUARAA TAFSEER BY DR. FARHAT HASHMI
The people of Thamud were very prosperous and powerful they had all the blessings of Allah, rivers, lush fields, and fruit bearing trees. They had carved their homes in the mountain and became proud and powerful.
Even though they were the children of the people who had taken refuge on Noah’s ark, they had become so successful and powerful that they had forgotten their Lord and humility had gone out with their overt extreme prosperity. They created fasad on this earth.
DEFINITION OF FASAD
What is fasad? It is to work hard to do acts of disobedience of Allah.
WHAT CAUSES FASAD?
When people break the limits of Allah it creates fasad, fighting, and disharmony.
FASAD happens from Sins. To work hard to do things that are Disobedient of Allah. Sins destroy the earth and destroy peace and harmony. Fasad on earth is from the disobedience of humans on earth and who suffers from it? It is humans.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN HUMANS CREATE FASAD?
From the Ahadith we know that different types of punishments are given to people in this dunya and are an outcome of fasad (disobedience of Allah). Some are listed below:
- Drought: Allah Subhanawataala removes rain from disobedient nations and if it were not for the animals there would be none.
- Removal of barakah (blessings)
- Deficiency in the needs of people like fruits, food and items that humans need essentially (surah Araaf: Allah took from Pharaoh fruits and gave them drought so that they would not disobey their Lord)
The fasad of the Musrifeen: In every era there are people (surah Naml wa kana fil madinati ……..) there were 9 groups that used to create who are extremely disobedient to Allah and cause fasad in the people.
Here in the nation of Thamud there are described as musrifeen. Their people followed their leaders who were extremely disobedient to Allah though they appeared most powerful.
Musrifeen is from Israaf: Excess, more than one can afford.
Thus the musrifeen being powerful from the dunya point of view are followed by the general public who is not as endowed with that kind of dunya power.
Those who do fasad in the world and do not improve things have a poor outcome in this world and in the next.
THE OUTCOME OF FASAD
When fasad happens people join politics, and thus the attention is diverted to fighting with the different elements and no time is left for learning the living according to Deen.
CHOOSING LEADERS ON THE BASIS OF THEIR RIGHTEOUSNESS
The Rasools are saying that if you want to follow someone then at least follow a leader who does not create fasad. At least choose someone who is a leader, who is righteous, not necessarily one who is powerful.
Allah Subhanawataala reminds us in the early part of Surah Baqarah:
Spreading fasad is from Munafiqaat:
What is munafiqat? Four characteristics
when he speaks he lies,
When given an amanah he does khianat
When he makes a promise he breaks it.
When he fights he uses bad language.
When Prophet Saleh told the people of Thamud to follow the leaders who are obedient to Allah, they said “you are mentally unstable, your have been affected by some spell”. You say we should not follow these leaders; you are out of your mind.
(My note: Nowadays in the USA if you tell the tea party fans that your leaders are misleading you the misguided people blame you for being out of your mind and sometimes get into an argument with you.)
Sometimes fans collect stars memorabilia that is Israaf and they are acting as musrifeen.
RESPONSE OF THAMUD TO SALEH (AS)
When saleh was explaining to his people they blamed him for being under a spell. They said you are just a human like us. If you do have any special powers then
(Surah Qamar 25 and 26) bring some sign.
They said he is an extreme liar. Allah Subhanawataala says they will soon know who is the extreme liar.
Thus Allah Suhanawataala provided a sign.
ALLAH’S SIGN TO THE NATION OF THAMUD
Thus he provided a camel and made specific days to drink from the spring. They had demanded that a camel should emerge from the mountain and the mountain slit and the camel cam e out and now they were caught in their own demand.
Water was scarce.
They were restricted in taking the water on the days when the camel drank from it.
They were also forbidden to touch it with a bad intention; they were told that a major disaster would occur.
They disobeyed and they cut the tendons off and then killed the camel.
Saleh said that you have three days for the azaab to come, and then they became worried, but were not repentant. Their Nafs came in and prevented them from making tauba and their arrogance did not allow them to bend.
Then they were gripped with the azaab, and thus their outcome is a sign for people.
They were creamed. (Details mentioned elsewhere in the Quran)
LESSONS FROM THESE AYAHS
- Success is in improvement not fasad
- For Islah(SUCCESS) one has to follow musliheen not Musrifeen Islah comes form Taqwa of Allah and obedience of the Rasool.
- When one finds the truth one should not deny it.
- One should not delay tauba
- Those who are obstinate and the Nafs rules they always lose
- Avoid Arrogance.
What is the barrier that prevents people for acknowledging the truth even when it is right in front of them:
In the Quran Allah Subhanawataala says that those who do not reflect on the Quran is it that their hearts are locked? It is these locks on the heart that prevent them from acknowledging the truth.
The locks are when one is so overpowered by ones own Nafs that one forgets that all the blessings are from Allah not from our own self or power.
When the munafiqeen were told not to spread fasad, they were unaware of anything wrong with it, When one is so wrapped up in ones own self one cannot see the truth.
My note: One should be constantly vigilant of the doors to our heart and monitor what is entering it through our eyes ears and the desires of our limbs. Tazkiyah Nafs comes from practice, practice, practice, not an armchair review of a book……..
Please keep me in your duas I too am struggling………
