Hast thou seen him who chooseth for his god his own lust? Wouldst thou then be guardian over him? (43)
Have you seen that person who has made his desires (of his or her Nafs etc) his or her god, making it the most important thing in their life and obedient to it. That person is unable to stave off those desires, and becomes their slave. It becomes his or her first priority. All other things become secondary.
This is a person who loves his own nafs and becomes a slave to his own self. In living beings animals are a good example, they eat, sleep and copulate whenever and wherever their desires dictate. (Bahemi Nafs as per Shaykh maghraoui)
If a human being does not discipline his or her desires of food, sleep, Copulation or other desires then these desires commanded by the Nafs becomes his or her god. Thus these items become invincibly dictatorial in his or her life.
Such a person does whatever his or her own desires dictate. Such a person is not in control of anyone and does not listen to anything and thus no one can be his helper or wakeel. Such a person cannot be helped.
1. Direct to him
2. To him but meant for other people
3. For RasoolAllah pbuh and everyone else also.
Thus here even though RasoolAllah pbuh is being addressed it is meant for everyone.
This is a Makki surah and here shirk is being addressed, shirk includes gods as well the desires of the Nafs.
Surah Jathiyah 45:23:
Hast thou seen him who maketh his desire his god, and Allah sendeth him astray purposely, and sealeth up his hearing and his heart, and setteth on his sight a covering? Then who will lead him after Allah (hath condemned him)? Will ye not then heed? (23)
Any habit, desire, or lust that makes one blind and deaf to Allah s obedience that becomes that person’s god.
No matter how much one desires something, person or act, if it is not halal or even if it is halal and stops that person from obeying Allah that desire then becomes a god that dictates that person. Anything that becomes so important that stops or prevents one from obeying Allah it becomes a god.
Allah humma inni Aaoozibikah min sharri nafsi
O Allah save me from the shar (mischief) of my nafs.
I fear for my Ummah in two things
1. The desires of the Nafs: which stop one from the Truth
2. Long term desires & plans: These makes one forget the Akhirah
Thus when Akhirah is in front of us, one finds oneself unprepared for our day of death.
Evaluate yourself when and where I am unable to overcome my desire where I forget or put off Allah’s obedience.
