He was frustrated, he had tried repeatedly for a very long time in every possible manner to convince them of Allah, His unity and His absolute Lordship, but they remained recalcitrant.
Finally reaching the limit of his patience with this pagan family and city of his origin, he threw up his hands, threw in the towel and left town.
WHO WAS HE TO LEAVE WITHOUT THE PERMISSION OF ALLAH?
He was no ordinary man; he was a blessed Prophet of Allah, chosen specifically by Him to give the message of Tawheed (The oneness of God) to his people.
No Prophet is allowed to give up and leave his people without the express permission of Allah, we have examples of Hud AS and Lut AS who were so close to danger that they were almost touched by it and yet they waited……… The waited even as danger howled at their door, waited for the word of their Lord before they could exit with the righteous followers leaving behind the disobedient communities to suffer the wrath of Allah.
Why did Younis AS leave before he was given leave to do so?
Only Allah knows the answer to this question.’ What I know is that his leaving before time and the events that unfolded after that have left us with an ayah seeking the mercy of Allah, an ayah which is an admittance of ones sins and mistakes and yet seeking His mercy and forgiveness in utmost humility, desolation, desperation and acceptance of whatever our Lord metes out to us.
An ayah……when recited rents the canopy of the heavens above, it rises so fast and with such piercing quality towards its destination that the end result of it shakes the reciter and his or her environs in a manner that leaves everyone in shock and awe.
The only caveat to its power lies in the sincerity of the reciter……..is it from the heart?
He traveled out of his city and approached the shoreline where he saw a ship; he waved to it for them to pick him up which they did. As the ship went into deeper waters it sprung a problem that had to do with weight and a person had to be removed to lighten the load of the ship. A lottery was made and the person who was to be thrown into the sea came out in the lottery to be Younis AS.
Stunned at the turn of the events he had barely hit the water when a large fish, a whale swallowed him.
In the darkness of the stomach of the fish, were it was like the composite darknesses of ignorance of his people without the Noor of the Quran, the enlightening word of God.
He realized that it was he who was the carrier of the light for his people and he was in the belly of the fish hundreds of miles away from them.
He heard the sound of dripping water but when it hit his skin he realized it was tearing up and peeling away his skin…….it was not water, it was possibly the acid in the stomach of the whale.
In the sheer darknesses in the belly of the fish that was in the darkness of the belly of the ocean, with no hope of relief or release, the dripping acid slowly bur progressively peeling his skin such that no hair were left on his body…he came to the ultimate realization that he had erred and that there was no redemption for him.
The words that escaped his lips rose out of the darknesses of the belly of the fish searing the darkness of the belly of the ocean and rose to the heavens carried by the angels to the Throne of our Lord……..Thus is the power of the word of Allah it provides light and hope even in the irreversible darkness of the belly of the fish who in turn is in the belly of the ocean from which there is no possible escape…..
And yet………….. Allah Subhanawataala who created us knows his creation and knows our weaknesses each one of them, and if we too become aware of them and turn to him, he is there to forgive and to receive, with love, affection and charity.
The name of this journey back to Allah Subhanawataala is termed “Tawbah or Repentance or going back to Him the Almighty” after having wandered into the darknesses of ignorance, and distractions similar to the darknesses in the belly of the fish in the belly of the ocean.
Allah Subhanawataala explains this in the Quran to Prophet Muhammad pbuh and to all of the believers to come , the words of Younis AS, which erupted from his heart and poured from his lips into this dua:
Surah AL Anbiya 21:87
And (mention) Dhu’n-Nun, when he went off in anger and deemed that We had no power over him, but he cried out in the darkness, saying: There is no God save Thee. Be Thou glorified! Lo! I have been a wrong-doer. (87)
And the Allah Subhanawataala reassures the Believers:
بِسۡمِ ٱللهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
فَٱسۡتَجَبۡنَا لَهُ ۥ وَنَجَّيۡنَـٰهُ مِنَ ٱلۡغَمِّۚ وَكَذَٲلِكَ نُـۨجِى ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ (٨٨
Then we heard his prayer and saved him from the anguish. Thus we save believers. (88)
SUPPLICATION: May Allah Subhanawataala save me and the Muslim Ummah from our anguish…….
Wait 24 secs and listen to the Qiraat of this ayah:
