Surah Al ISra: 17:79

And some part of the night awake for it, a largess for thee. It may be that thy Lord will raise thee to a praised estate. (79)

Tafseer by Dr. Farhat Hashmi (aldhudapk.com)

And at night pray Tahajjud. The nafilas are for you ( pbuh) especially. (Here something more is being offered to Prophet Muhammad pbuh for him and his Ummah which will become apparent as you read on).

The word Tahajjud comes from “Hajada ” means sleeping and awakening both. Tahajjud means “breaking sleep”.

Tahajjud is a favorite Salah of Allah Subhanawataala.

This is a Nafila salah for all, but for Rasool Allah it is more.(read on)

It is a Nafil for the Ummah. Even though it is Nafil the praying of this Salah has been stressed the most in all the Nafilas and has the most importance after fard salah.

“Tahajjud is a method to get closer to Allah and it is a way to erase sins and to safeguard oneself from future sins”

After fard prayers Tahajjud Salah is the most Afzal (superior)

Allah Subhanawataala asks at Tahajjud time “ Is there anyone who needs forgiveness.”

This is the hour  (Salah of Tahajjud) of forgiveness and acceptance of supplications.

17: 79: Allah Subhana wataala says: Pray the Naafila of the Tahajjud and your Rab will stand you (Prophet Muhammad pbuh) at  Muqaam e Mahmood

This is the place where our Rasool (pbuh) will stand and do Shifaat for his Ummah and all the people will praise Allah.

Hadith of Tirmizi regarding the Muqaam e Mahmood   (summarized)

Rasool Allah said

“I am the chief of the children of Adam and my words do not denote pride, On the day of Qiyamah the banner of Hamd (The praise of Allah) will be in my hand and these words do not denote pride and the children of Adam and others will be under it.

On that day people will have three anxieties:

People will go to Adam AS and ask for intercession who will decline as he will say that he made a mistake in Jannah and he will send them on to Noah (AS) and he to Ibrahim  (AS) and Musa (AS) and Jesus (AS) and they will all decline, the request for various reasons.

They will then come to me and I will go with them to the door of Jannah and knock on it I will be asked “ who is it” and I will say “Muhammad “ (pbuh) and the door will be opened for me and the angels will say “Marhaba” and I will throw myself in prostration”

Allah Subhanawataala will fill my heart with His Hamd o Sana (divine Praise), which I will do copiously in the manner in which my heart has been filled with.

Then Allah Subhanawtaala will command “raise your head, ask me and your question will be answered, ask for Shifaat and your shifaat will be accepted, express your Mudua your request will be honored,”

This place is the place where Rasool (pbuh) will be praising Allah in the manner that Allah filled his heart with and the people in waiting will also be praising Allah,……..this is the Muqaam e Mahmood or the place of  “praised estate”

He Subhanawataala will put His hamd (method of praise) in the heart of the Rasool (pbuh) who will do plentiful of praise, and then he (pbuh) will be asked to raise his head and will be asked for his request of shifaat while his heart is filled with the hamd o sana of Allah Subhanawataala. It is from this special place called Muqaam e Mahmood where he will praise Allah he will get Shifaat for his Ummah.

Thus Allah Subhanawataala has deemed Tahajjud as the most afzal of Naafila.

Thus Rasool Allah (pbuh) would pray so long in Tahajjud that his feet would swell, and when he was asked why did he pray so long when he had already been assured Jannah? He said:

“Should I not be a grateful servant of my Lord?

Hadith: Bukhari Volume 1, Book 11, Number 588: Narrated Jabir bin ‘Abdullah:

Allah’s Apostle said,

“Whoever after listening to the Adhan says, ‘Allahumma Rabba hadhihi-d-da’ watit-tammati was-salatil qa’imati, ati Muhammadan al-wasilata wal-fadilata, wab’ athhu maqaman mahmudan-il-ladhi wa’ adtahu (O Allah! Lord of this perfect call (of not ascribing partners to You) and of the regular prayer, which is going to be established! Kindly give Muhammad the right of intercession and superiority and send him (on the Day of Judgment) to the best and the highest place in Paradise which You promised him)’, then intercession for me will be permitted for him on the Day of Resurrection”).

Bukhari Volume 1, Book 3, Number 98: Narrated Abu Huraira:

I said: “O Allah’s Apostle! Who will be the luckiest person, who will gain your intercession on the Day of Resurrection?” Allah’s Apostle said: O Abu Huraira! “I have thought that none will ask me about it before you as I know your longing for the (learning of) Hadiths. The luckiest person who will have my intercession on the Day of Resurrection will be the one who said sincerely from the bottom of his heart:

“None has the right to be worshipped but Allah.”

  3. Salam alaikum,
we have tahajjud and dhuha prayer (i dont join this, bcoz dhuha is easy) support group here. we flash ppl on the group on their phones to wake up, and they wake up other, like missed-call chain.
every group has 10 members only.
by logic tahajjud should be our favorite prayer, not only bcoz the degree, also bcoz we are doing it alone, (sometimes) in the dark. no one can see us, easier to concentrate bcoz of the silence.
For me, little things can distract my concentration very easily. in jamaah prayer, when a sister scratch or mover faster, i’ll be distracted 😦 subhanAllah. Thats why tahajjud shoud everyone’s favorite. 😀
