BLINDLY FOLLOWING LEADERS: 20:82-85

“But without doubt, I am (also) He that forgives again, and again to those who repent, believe, and do right― who, in fine, are ready to receive true guidance.” (82) (When Moses was up on the Mount, Allah said:) “What made thee hasten in advance, of thy people, O Moses?” (83) He replied: “Behold, they are close on my footsteps: I hastened to Thee O my Lord to please Thee.” (84) (Allah) said: “We have tested thy people in thy absence: the Samiri has led them astray.” (85)

TAFSEER BY DR. FARHAT HASHMI (TRANSLATED FROM URDU)

The story of Mount Tur

70 people came with Moses As he hurried to the place of appointment, and Allah SW asked him who made you hurry? (Why had he left the others behind.it was to seek knowledge in the form of Torah) Moses AS said they are coming behind me and I came early to please you

Punctuality rewarded, example used here is of Jooma prayer:

On Juma the first to arrive is equal to sawab size of camel and then sheep etc and then if late then zero.

Allah SWT says I have tested your nation in your absence. What was the test? Samiri is from a tribe of Samira, and he has misled your people.

6 lakh were the total number of Children of Israel samiri made calf and all except 12000 started worshipping them and committing shirk. Here fitna and misguidance is equal.

Surah Baqarah:

And remember We divided the sea for you and saved you and drowned Pharaoh’s people within your very sight. (50)

Al Araaf 184:

Do they not reflect? Their companion is not seized with madness: he is but a perspicuous warner. (184)

Mioses AS turned around towards his people with extreme anger and extreme sadness.

WHAT I LEARNED FROM THIS:

  1. One should be eager to gain knowledge given the example of Moses AS hurrying to get to Mount Toor at the appointed place ahead of his companions.
  2. One should be careful of whom one chooses as a leader. Samiri made shirk attractive by making the gold calf, and most of the Children of Israel began to worship it and thus committing shirk.
  3. With disappointment as was experienced by Moses AS of his people who could not stay on the straight path even for a few days/hours while he had gone to get the message from their Lord for their own good, comes the twin emotions associated with frustration: Anger and sadness.
