Summarized from the Halaqa given by Dr HY transcribed by Anon.

ASMAA’ ULLAHIL HUSNAA’

Allah, swt is Unique, perfect and Infinite in all His names of beauty and majesty. They all describe His attributes or His Actions. They are all absolutely beautiful and we ascribe no evil or harm to His names, swt. Every one of His names, if reflected by a sound intellect and understood by a clean heart – increases the reverence and love for Allah, swt .

The bedrock and foundation of our deen is Eemaan billah – Faith in Allah, swt. Integral to this is Tawheed of Allah swt’s Asmaa(names) and Sifaat(attributes). Therefore my Eeman is founded and strengthened by the knowledge of  who Allah, swt is.

Ibn Taymiyyah, r.a teaches us to study and reflect on the Qur’an – where He swt introduces us to Him , describes Himself with His most perfect names and attributes and Acts.

-The greatest Ayah of the Qur’an – Ayat al Qursi

-The Umm (essence) of the Qur’an – Surat al Fatihah

– The surah Rasul Allah, s.a described as 1/3rd of the Qur’an – Sural al Ikhlas

1.Allah, swt promises of Ultimate felicity and success – Jannah , for the one who

-Enumerates (Ahsaaha) His beautiful Names

-Understands their meaning(Fahm)

-Memorises them(Hifd)

-Strives to live by Them(‘Amal)

-Calls Allah, swt by them (Dua’)

Abu Huraira, radhiAllahu anhu narrated Allah’s Messenger, sallaAllahu alayhi wa sallim as saying : “Allah has ninety-nine Names, i.e., one hundred minus one, and whoever ‘ahsaha’ [enumerates them, believes in them, ponders their meanings, worships Allah by them and supplicates with them, and acts by them according to one’s belief in them] will enter Paradise; and Allah is Witr (“Odd”, i.e. He is one, and it is an odd number) and loves ‘the Witr‘ (i.e., odd numbers).”

Al Bukhari and Muslim.

2.ALLAH ,swt sent down His recited Ayaat and created His manifest Ayaat in the universe – so we may ponder, reflect and learn about Him, swt

65:12 ALLAH is He who has created seven heavens, and, like them, [the many aspects] of the earth. Through all of them flows down from on high, unceasingly, His [creative] will, so that you might come to know that ALLAH has the power to will anything, and that ALLAH encompasses all things with His knowledge.

As our ‘Ulamaa’ explain : the very purpose of our existence is to know Him and worship Him, alone, swt.

51:56 And [tell them that] I have not created the Jinn  and Humans to any end other than that they may [know and] worship Me.

3. Knowledge of Allah, swt(Ma’rifah) leads to beautiful ‘Ibaadah(worship, submission, surrender) to Him.

Internal ‘ibadah – When I understand His names, swt of beauty – I begin to love Him, swt more than anyone/thing else; When I understand His attributes of Majesty, Power and Qahr (absolute control) – I begin to be in awe and fear of Him, alone ; I rely on none but Him,swt, Hope in none but Him, swt and long for none but Him, swt,

Sabr(perseverance) in obedience becomes a sweet fruit of this ‘ilm.

External ‘ibadah – When my heart is in a state of watchfulness of Him, swt, my limbs respond by avoiding sins – major and minor and strive in obeying and pleasing Him, swt.

4.Qurb ( Closeness) to Him, swt with our hearts – As Imam Ibn al Qayyim, r.a says “Whomsoever has in his/her heart love for His/her Rabb and desires/seeks His countenance, swt and longs to meet Him, swt – then let him/her seek Him, swt by His names and attributes”.

5.True Happiness – externally a beautiful and blessed life and internally peace and contentment- The one who Allah, swt blesses with knowledge of His names and attributes – lives in certainty and serenity of his heart, tranquility of his nafs and his chest is in a state of expansion – Inshirah.

6.Uns billah – Solace and comfort in times of blessing or affliction is only with ALLAH, swt.

7.Da’wah – We call others to Him by teaching them of His perfection , Majesty and beauty. Every call to Him in the Qur’an or Sunnah – by means of Targheeb(hope) or Tarheeb(fear) is by His names/attributes.

8.Allah, swt loves for us to live by His beautiful Names. We learn to adorn our character with them in our human dimension, with Rasul Allah, s.a as our example – Allah swt is beautiful and He loves beauty – so we strive to be beautiful in our hearts and deeds and so on…

9.The more knowledgeable I am of Him, swt – the more knowledgeable I am of His creation and the more ignorant I am of Him, swt – the more ignorant I am in my interactions with His creation.

Every thing that I experience – is between one of these 3 categories –

–       The Fadl(favor) of Allah

–       The ‘adl(justice) of Allah

–       The Hikmah (wisdom) of Allah

–       Therefore when I recognize this, I strive to give Him, swt His just due and I live amongst His creation in harmony, giving them their just dues.

10.Allah, swt commands us to implore and call on Him,swt with His names, at all times.

7:180 And to ALLAH [alone] are the attributes of perfection; invoke Him, then, by these, and stand aloof from all who distort the meaning of His attributes: they shall be requited for all that they were wont to do!

17:110  Say: “Invoke ALLAH, or invoke AR RAHMAAN: by whichever name you invoke Him, [He is always the One-for] His are all the attributes of perfection.

Some of His names and attributes are in the Qur’an, some of them taught to us by His Rasul,s.a and knowledge of some of them, is with Him, alone. Therefore we do not argue about the exact number of His names/attributes. As taught to us by Rasul, s.a in this du’a during affliction –

  1. Asalaam o alaikum! There is a caveat that in writing your experience if you state something to be an islamic rule it is good to give a reference so that people can read it after they have read your post.
Good luck! May your niyyah always be to please Allah rather than people.

  2. Everybody Inshallah can you visit my Islamic blog. i really need help to get more views I have been working on it.

    Jazallah khair

    • Asalaam o alaikum,
Perhaps it would help get more traffic if you would write in your blog, what you do to learn and practice more about Islam.
Cutting and pasting from other sources especially other peoples opinions from the internet makes for very boring reading.
So share yourself…..What makes you muslim?

      • Thank you for your advice. Inshallah I will write my own thoughts. I was thinking of doing that before but I did not think anyone would want to read about me like me as a Muslim, my life, and my strives. So thats why I copied and paste things. But I made sure everyone knew that I didn’t type that myself.
i will now write some topics about me I am also adding tags. Do tags really help?
I have chosen a new theme and I have made catergories and its looks much better now and more organized.

  3. Assalaamu alaikum Asma,

Beautiful! May Allah SWT give you so much reward for this
article. The way you put it together is beautiful. Would you please explain each name of Allah SWT in future?
