And keep thy soul content with those who call on their Lord morning and evening, seeking His Face; and let not thine eyes pass beyond them seeking the pomp and glitter of this Life; nor obey any whose heart We have permitted to neglect the remembrance of Us, one who follows his own desires, whose case has gone beyond all bounds. TAFSEER BY DR. FARHAT HASHMI (translated from Urdu)
Addressing RasoolAllah (pbuh) “ Stop your self in front of those people who make duas to their Rabb in the morning and in the late afternoon, They want His (Subhanawataala) goodwill. That is their goal, and do not turn away your eyes from them.
Allah Subhanawataala is commanding RasoolAllah (pbuh) to keep the company of such people, because we will be raised in the Akirah with those people who we love and whose company we keep.
All these people want is the goodwill of Allah.
There are two periods of the day, which are spiritual time for prayer and dua: The beginning of the day and towards the decline of the day.
We should never for a moment think that company does not affect us.
Anas (RA) related that Prophet Muhammad pbuh said :
“I like to sit with those people who spend their time in Dhikr especially those who pray fajr and then continue to do Dhikr till the sun comes up spending their time in dua and tilawat, as well as those who do Dhikr in the late afternoon, before the sun sets. And I like this better than freeing four slaves from the children of Ismail”
Why does RasoolAllah (pbuh) want to sit with them? It is the company of the people who are in Dhikr of Allah that is preferred by RasoolAllah pbuh. The importance of the quality and actions of the company that is desirable to Allah Subhanawataala and Prophet Muhammad pbuh is clearly delineated in these ayahs and in the Hadith.
Tafseer continues: Allah Subhanawataala says……. you want the beauty of this life and dunya.
Surah Al Anaam 006.052:
Send not away those who call on their Lord morning and evening, seeking His face. In naught art thou accountable for them, and in naught are they accountable for thee, that thou shouldst turn them away, and thus be (one) of the unjust.
EQUALITY IN ISLAM
When RasoolAllah pbuh invited people to Islam, the first people who took the faith were slaves
The following related by Saad Ibn Waqaas:
There were 6 people with us including Bilal. The chieftains of Mecca asked RA to remove the slaves so that they can talk to RA and for a fleeting moment RA thought of doing so thinking that it may change their hearts, but Allah’s command forbade that. Thus the dignitaries and slaves sat in the same place in the presence of Prophet Muhammad pbuh.
RasoolALLAH pbuh did not want that but when the dignitaries came, RasoolAllah pbuh thought that maybe by bowing to their demand of removing the company of the slaves it might bring them into the fold of Islam, but Allah Subhanawataala negated that, and commanded that do not go after them in this manner.
Elsewhere Allah Subhanawataala says:
Do not obey those whose heart we have made ghafil (heedless) of our remembrance.
Allah Subhanawataala says; Turn your face away from the one who turns his face away from us.
Thus when we are in the company of people who are away from Allah then stay away because one may become involved in their ways.
Surah Najam 053.029 Therefore shun those who turn away from Our Message and desire nothing but the life of this world.
053.030 That is as far as knowledge will reach them. Verily thy Lord knoweth best those who stray from His Path, and He knoweth best those who receive guidance.
Surah Kahf: Allah Subhanawtaaala is addressing RasoolAllah pbuh but this is being addressed to all of us also:
Summary of this ayah:
018.028 : And keep thy soul content with those who call on their Lord morning and evening, seeking His Face; and let not thine eyes pass beyond them, seeking the pomp and glitter of this Life; nor obey any whose heart We have permitted to neglect the remembrance of Us, one who follows his own desires, whose case has gone beyond all bounds.
Who are the people whose company is undesirable:
Those in the three categories:
- Their hearts are ghafil (heedless)
- They follow their desires (Nafs)
- There is no moderation in their daily life; they exceed the limits in everything to fulfill their desires.
Keeping the company of the people of Allah is not enough but one must also leave the company of those who are away from Allah.
He who follows his own desires, and his affairs are exceeding all bounds, there is no balance in his life.
