EXCERPTED FROM the Halaqa on Seeking knowledge by Dr. H. Younis, translated by anon author For Part one CLICK HERE

I. How to learn the ilm of Deen?

A. – READ what you learn اقْرَأْ – For reading is harder than listening – requires struggling against my Nafs

– Read in the name of your Lord, who teaches بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ – Read and learn in your Lord’s name and for your Lord’s pleasure only for it is He, Subhanawataala who commands us to read

B.  WRITE what you learn عَلَّمَ بِالْقَلَمِ – for it is when I collect my thoughts, and focus on what is being taught and write them down – that I learn.

ماذا تريد تتعلم؟

II. What to learn?

Allah Subhanawataala uses the command verb phrase اعلم/اعلمو  – Know!  I.e. learn! 31 times in the Holy Qur’an. Thus this ‘ilm is emphasized by Him, Subhanawataala. Some of these Ayaat and their explanations are summarized:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ اسْتَجِيبُواْ لِلّهِ وَلِلرَّسُولِ إِذَا دَعَاكُم لِمَا يُحْيِيكُمْ وَاعْلَمُواْ أَنَّ اللّهَ يَحُولُ بَيْنَ الْمَرْءِ وَقَلْبِهِ وَأَنَّهُ إِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَ

· 8:24 O you who have attained to faith! Respond to the call of God and the Apostle whenever he calls you unto that which will give you life; and know that God intervenes between man and his heart, and that unto Him you shall be gathered.

The commands in this Ayah:

  1. Respond (willingly and unhesitatingly) to every command of Allah, Subhanawataala and His Rasool ( peace and blessings be upon him), with obedience and respond to every prohibition with avoidance

Why? Because every command and prohibition gives life to my heart and health to my body.

Examples: If I do not lie, I pray and go for Hajj, it infuses life into my heart as I obey and respond to the commandments of my Lord

2. What happens if I do not respond?– Allah, Subhanawataala tells me: KNOW!!! He Subhanwataala warns that He will allow my heart to deviate from what is good for it.

SUPPLICATION: Rasul Allah s.a  du’a –

“O One who turns hearts, keep my heart firm on your Deen”

يا مقلب  القلوب ثبت قلبي على دينكأأا ا

Therefore in my journey to Allah Subhanwataala, I have to obey Him or else obstacles are placed in my heart in reaching Him.
