Surah Ar-Rad (The Thunder)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Alif Lam Mim Ra. These are the Signs (or Verses) of the Book: that which hath been revealed unto thee from thy Lord is the Truth; but most men believe not. (1) Allah is He Who raised the heavens without any pillars that ye can see; then He established Himself on the Throne (of authority); He has subjected the sun and the moon (to His law)! Each one runs (its course) for a term appointed. He doth regulate all affairs explaining the Signs in detail that ye may believe with certainty in the meeting with your Lord. (2)
This book words that were revealed to Prophet Muhammad are the truth but people do not understand it and do not believe it. Allah Subhananawataala says in Surah Yusuf:
012.105: And how many Signs in the heavens and the earth do they pass by? Yet they turn (their faces) away from them!
Keep in mind: Surah Yusuf shows contrasts of life, and some lessons, as well as in Surah Lut the good and the bad, the blind and the seeing are not the same and one must learn how to choose what is best and the truth.
This Surah gives contrasts and shows us that how we must recognize the truth from falsehood.
Allah is that who raised the roof of the Heavens (skies) without pillars, and you see the heights of the roof of the skies and you see there are no pillars
In Surah Hajj Allah Subhanawataala says:
22: 65. Do you not see that Allah has made subservient to you whatsoever is in the earth and the ships running in the sea by His command? And He withholds the heaven from falling on the earth except with His permission; most surely Allah is Compassionate, Merciful to men.
Allah has raised the skies without pillars that you cannot see. The network of the magnetic field of these planets etc in orbit holds each other and is invisible to us.
He captured the suns and moon and each is moving at a particular pace as commanded. How long they will move? For a specified time: till the Day of Judgment, and or the specified time of completing the circuit example of a year example explained in detail in Surah Yaseen. (All planets are moving in their own orbits):
036.037 And a Sign for them is the Night: We withdraw there from the Day, and behold they are plunged in darkness;
036.038: And the sun runs his course for a period determined for him: that is the decree of (Him), the Exalted in Might, the All-Knowing.
036.039: And the Moon, – We have measured for her mansions (to traverse) till she returns like the old (and withered) lower part of a date-stalk.
036.040I: It is not permitted to the Sun to catch up the Moon, nor can the Night outstrip the Day: Each (just) swims along in (its own) orbit (according to Law).
He Subhanawataala plans for everything and explains all these to you so that you prepare for the time you will meet your Lord, because these things will not last for ever nor will you.
Just as you will become dust, this Universe one day will also be dust.
Allah Subhanawtaala has given a choice to human beings between the good and the bad, the sour and the sweet, the truth and falsehood. These are only some of the choices amongst many.
Allah Subhanawataala encourages us in this Surah to use our intellect and deductive and reasoning abilities to discern what is good for us and what is not. He also gives example of His creation of the skies and the sun and moon and explains how they move in a specific time and space. Scientists who search for answers find them and then people like me and others read them and exclaim in wonder about our Creator.
These ayahs call us to:
- Recognize our Creator in the perfection on his creation
- Recognize that we have choices, some innocent and some significant ones that will change our outcome on the day of judgment
- To understand that time is finite and each one of us has an individual limit on earth.
- Recognize that we will not live forever, nor will the Universe.
5. To accept and bow with gratitude and respect to our Creator.
