007.157 YUSUFALI: “Those who follow the messenger, the unlettered Prophet, whom they find mentioned in their own (scriptures),- in the law and the Gospel;- for he commands them what is just and forbids them what is evil; he allows them as lawful what is good (and pure) and prohibits them from what is bad (and impure); He releases them from their heavy burdens and from the yokes that are upon them. So it is those who believe in him, honor him, help him, and follow the light which is sent down with him, – it is they who will prosper.”
PICKTHAL: Those who follow the messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write, whom they will find described in the Torah and the Gospel (which are) with them. He will enjoin on them that which is right and forbid them that which is wrong. He will make lawful for them all good things and prohibit for them only the foul; and he will relieve them of their burden and the fetters that they used to wear. Then those who believe in him, and honor him, and help him, and follow the light, which is sent down with him: they are the successful.
This ayah has two major messages:
1. THE DESCRIPTION OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD PBUH
Allah Subhanawataala defines what he sent in the Torah and the Gospel to describe the Messenger He will send i.e. Prophet Muhammad PBUH
2. THE FORMULA FOR SUCCESS & PROSPERITY
An open invitation to become successful and prosper to “the people” of those times (Bani Israel and others), as well as for those in the future.
TAFSEER BY FARHAT HASHMI (Translated)
Those people who will have Allah’s rahma are those people who follow the Rasool and Nabi (Nabi is someone who has been selected to give the message to people and receives revelation from Allah SWT).
Allah Subhanawataala says about The Prophet who can neither read nor write (Ummi) here Al Ummi is used as a compliment he despite being unable to read or write, brought the pure word of Allah (without mixing information from his own readings and writings)
Al -Ummi (Ghazali) Umm one who cannot read or write.
Rasool said about himself, “we are Ummi an Ummah of one who cannot read or write (do hisaab)” usually this is a considered a defect, but here Al Ummi is mentioned as a compliment from Allah SWT, because despite not being able to read and write what he (PBUH) transmitted from Allah’s teachings became a Mercy for Mankind.
The Ilm that he (PBUH) got was directly from Allah SWT without the usual methods of learning i.e. reading and writing. His teacher was Allah SWT without the intermediary of the written or read word.
DESCRIPTION OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD (PBUH) IN THE TORAH AND THE GOSPEL:
Those who find his (PBUH) name (description) written in the Torah and the Gospel.
(Another reference in the Quran: Surah Saff Musadaqal lima bayna yadaya minat taurati…….)
Allah SWT states that in the Torah and Gospel, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is described as:
1. He will be Ummi
3. He will command them to do good and forbid them from evil
4. He will make halal the paak (pure) things and make haraam Khabaes (na paak) things Khabaes are two types:
a) Li- zaati eg it is impure intrinsically, rotten things, dead animals, blood etc.
Reference in the Quran regarding eating tayaab and halal:
002.057 YUSUFALI: And We gave you the shade of clouds and sent down to you Manna and quails, saying: “Eat of the good things We have provided for you:” (But they rebelled); to us they did no harm, but they harmed their own souls.
002.172 YUSUFALI: O ye who believe! Eat of the good things that We have provided for you, and be grateful to Allah, if it is Him ye worship.
b) Li Kasbehi, those earnings that are not halal, e.g. earnings from riba, dealing with alcohol etc.
5. He will remove the burdens: this refers to the harsh commandments of Allah SWT given to previous nations via the torah and gospel. These harsh commandments were abrogated in the Quran and were taught to mankind via Prophet Muhammad PBUH
Examples of the harsh commandments of Allah SWT or “burdens” given to previous nations via the Torah and Gospel:
a) Cutting out the section of the cloth that was tainted with an impurity such as urine, i.e. it could not be purified by washing.
b) Maal e Ghanimat (war booty) was burnt and could not be used
c) A menstruating woman could not live with her husband in her house and could not touch things for her husband
d) Punishment for killing was “A life for a life” there was no mercy or other option for giving justice in the circumstances.
HADITH: Prophet Muhammad said this about himself “ I have been sent with the Deen e Haneef which is easy and light (Sehal)
